A D&D Campaign Setting

SANCTUM

A City Under False Gods

⚠   No Miracles Are Free   ⚠

Descend
One city. One dungeon.
A thousand ways to die in debt.

Sanctum is not a place people chose. It is a place they arrived at, stayed in longer than intended, and eventually stopped trying to leave. The Gods saw to that.

Full-bleed aerial view of Sanctum at night. Concentric ring districts descend to a glowing dungeon maw at the centre. Torchlit streets, faction towers, gold and blood-red light.

The World

People don't stay
because it's safe.

They stay because they're in debt — or because this is the only place in the world where a nobody born into nothing can die a God.

Beyond these walls is the kingdom of Altair — one queen in Gilder, one goddess in every chapel, and a great many laws Sanctum has never once obeyed. None of it has the Delve. None of it turns a name into power.

Sanctum's vast walls seen from outside at dusk. A living world — roads, hills, distant cities — stretches beyond.
Map of the continent of Altair, with the walled city of Sanctum at its centre, the capital Gilder to the north-east, Eryndor against the western mountains, the southern desert, and the eastern islands.
Altair

One law they
will not bend.

Altair has a single goddess, Somi, and a single law that Crown and Church enforce together: nothing may be taken back out of the River Styx, and nothing may be read ahead of it.

Resurrection is a capital crime on every acre of the continent. Divination too. Sanctum is not on the continent's law.

So they come — with a body packed in salt, everything they own spent on the road — because this is the only door in the world that opens.

"She asked for her husband back.
The Pact gave him back, and wrote two contracts —
because a man the law says is dead
can only be alive here."

"The Gods did not descend from heaven.
They climbed out of the same gutter as the rest of us —
they just had the sense to charge for the rope."

A lone figure witnessed by an enormous crowd — torchlit, dramatic, the moment a name becomes legend.
Renown

Power is not given.
It is witnessed.

In Sanctum, the only path to Godhood is Renown. Not approval. Not morality. The weight your name carries when someone speaks it in the dark.

Fear and admiration accumulate the same. The only enemy is obscurity.

Enormous cathedral-like hall filled with debt ledgers and scrolls. Dim light. A lone figure dwarfed by the weight of record.
Divine Debt

Born Owing.

Three hundred years of miracles have compounded into something inescapable. Debt is not experienced as shame anymore.

It is experienced as weather.

The Gods of Sanctum

Seven Spheres.
Seven Chains.

Each God controls something essential. None of them got there by being kind. They fight through agents, deniable violence, and the slow destruction of each other's names.

The Delve

The Reason
Everything Exists.

An infinite dungeon of shifting architecture beneath the city. No one knows who built it. No one knows what's at the bottom. People keep going in anyway.

How Deep
Do You Go?

1–3

The Shallows

Well-mapped. Regularly cleared. Dangerous in a mundane way — other delvers are frequently the biggest threat.

Recoverable: Monster cores, iron-grade ore, minor magical herbs
4–7

The Middle Dark

Where professional delvers work. Maps exist but are always slightly incomplete. Ruins of an unknown civilisation begin here.

Recoverable: Rare alloys, pre-Sanctum artifacts, monster cores worth real money
8–12

The Unmapped

Beyond reliable cartography. The architecture becomes genuinely alien. Monsters here seem almost intelligent.

Recoverable: Reality-adjacent materials, artifacts of unclear purpose
13+

The Deep

Theoretical. No confirmed survivor has returned from below Floor 12 with clear memory intact.

Unknown. That is entirely the point.
"Everyone in Sanctum is working off a debt.
The Gods just decided they should be the ones
holding the ledger."
